Flower Friday - Zinnias

I can't believe it's already mid-August. I mean, it was just January right...? Anyways, as I try to get over the speed of passing time, I'll try to distract myself with this Flower Friday, which is all about zinnias!

Summer in a bucket...

When I think of zinnias, summer automatically springs to mind. I love the vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, purple, pink and white that reflect the summer months so well.

Named for Johann Gottfried Zinn, a botanist and anatomist, who interestingly enough, also contributed in being one of the first people to describe the anatomy of the eye... Speaking of names, I've also heard of Zinnia being a girl's name - and if you name your child Zinnia, you'll also have to decide how it should be pronounced, which is a whole other thing. I've heard it said so many ways - zeenya, zenya, or zin-ni-a. Too many choices people!!

Zinnias are super easy to grow - they're a great flower to grow in the garden and can be used to liven up any floral arrangement. They love the sun and do well in hot climates, which is great for growing here in the South. They are known to represent endurance as they keep on blooming throughout the season and heat.

This site list the following meanings for the different colors:

- yellow: remembrance

- white: goodness

- magenta: affection

- red: of the heart, steadfastness, familial ties

- mixed: thinking of an absent friend

We've used them a number of times, especially when a design calls for bright colors! They're great to give away to someone, making a vivid and cheerful display, or in arrangements of all kinds in weddings or special events. Below are some examples and ideas!
